1980 R.L. Mumme 6 Melanerpes formicivorus Plaque (14 April) I also thought I saw the tail end of a dominance interaction between ♂473 + ♀521, ♂473 pecking, ♂521 chattering. However, I was not sure. Birds hanging out on "Adobe Hill" 15 April Start watch 0540. ♀496 definitely seems like an adjunct group member. 0600, she garricks in Big Blue Oak toward lower bank, ♂521 + ♀494 fly over there, and both seem to mildly chase her, then tolerate her in the Blue Oak. All 3 return to granary, waiting, but ♂521 chases ♀496, ♀494 following. As soon as ♀496 away from granary, chasing subsides. 0720, Everybody in Blue Oak, looks peaceful. All fly to granary, ♂521 chases ♀496 again. Does not like her in the main area. 0740 Dominance!! ♂473 a gentle peck to ♂521, returns head. This occurred in the armpit of the next tree. both ♂♂ were at the top, ♀494 was below. ♂521 is not tolerant of ♀496 in the granary, so perhaps ♂473 will encourage him to accept her. End 0745. 0750. More dominance!! ♀494 probing leaves, ♀496, perched nearby, flies directly at her scrap! This occurred in the Big Blue. 0805. for awhile, all 4 birds together, then a big confusing scrap, then all 4 together again. S. Wishimura thought ♀494 chased ♀496 which takes more sense by latter watches Sandy reports another ♂473 ♀596 copulation at roosting on 11 April, See her notes. 17 April Start 0720. Things have still not settled down here. ♀476 relegated to far reaches of territory, even garricks twice both Big in Blue Oak, the Griffin sycamores, and numerous times up
