1980 R.C. Mumme 2 Melanerpes formicivorus Plaque Hastings Reservation (7 April) were watching ♀522 tried to chase ♀NB, whereupon, → * * ♂473 pecked the hell out of ♀522. Also saw NB♀ waking with ♂521. ♀522 still doing a lot of chasing. NB♀ often chased by ♀522, but she (presumed) chases another ♀NB peripheral to the main event. ♂♂ also chase up by cabin, but couldn't tell with who. No sign of School Hill babies so it looks bad for them. End 1818 with these guys still at it. 8 April Things are hopping when I walk out at 0700. An hour of watching reveals the following: ① A NB♀ is definitely in! She is waltz-trading with the 2 ♂♂, chasing other intruder ♀♀ (both School Hill babies here this morning). ② ♀522 has taken a backseat. She has not chased the NB♀ this morning, and in fact has remained up in the cabin area most of the morning, while the main events have taken place down around the granary and the sycamores. ♀522 has watched occasionally, a few times "visited" by the ♂♂, but otherwise has kept a low profile. ③ I saw an UBO ♂ intruder this morning for the first time, and I believe (but was never sure) he was getting a sound chasing from the two ♂♂. 0840 ♀522 did chase somebody out of the cabin blue oak, but 'I don't know who. Twice, ♂521 made preliminary attempts to mount the ♀NB, one getting a small peck (Edie Walter), ♀NB drums much. ♀522 watches, occasionally garricks from cabin area, End 1600.
