1980 R.L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation 7 April Tried to watch roosting here, but nobody came to last years nest hole. A great commotion (squirrels, wasps) from the granary until very late made me suspect pre-roost mounting and roosting there. 8 April Weird roosting, learning nothing. Very late. 9 April Sandy + I tried to watch here again. Very late again, nothing certain. 24 April Watched Roosting at the nest hole here tonight, and it was definitely 234 (Blue/white-OPink. 6 May I flush a bird out of the low hole in the granary. A new nest! 14 may A dull nest watch here, plus roosting, whereas far as I could tell, nobody roosted in the nest. 27 may Watched roosting at nest #3 (in last year's hole), and I believe it was 234. He entered the hole first, than 252, then immediately a bird flew out, landed at the hole again. I think it was 252 that flew out, meaning 234 roosted. 29 may Roosting again, but I see nothing! F hope these guys haven't failed again. 8 June I come up here at 1530 to check what I thought was the nest with 4 eggs, but I see NUTHEN! There were 4 eggs (Blue), none laid 7 June. Another failure? Perhaps I am not seeing the eggs. 9 June Start watch 0820 from hide at granary. 1100. There's been zero interest in the "nest" hole, or any other hole for that matter.
