1980 R.L. Mumme 27 Journal Hastings Reservations 3 Dec Rain, finally! over 1 1/2 inches, according to Jim. I putter around the cabin, weigh acorns, work on grant proposal. 4 Dec Still a bit of rain in the morning, but then clearing, cleaned up the cabin, weighed acorns. Blazing Saddles fiasco at the Hardys. 5 Dec Watched OK at 1500 + 1800, followed by dinner at Red House, then a great movie, Lawrence of Arabia, at the Carmel Valley Library. 6 Dec Worked on the grant proposal, dull. 7-14 Dec Hectic week in Berkeley, grant proposal, electrophoresis, etc. Museum + 200 Christmas parties. Return to Hastings around noon 14 Dec. Dave & Suzanne arrive for a visit around 1630 hrs. 15 Dec Quite a day, as Dave gives me a good kick in the ass to go out & try to catch Hermit Thrushes. We run Pami's nets at the watertrough, and set up three on the still water trough, and catch WHITE and color band 12 Hermit Thrushes! Wow! I felt terrible in some ways since I had to break into Red House, stole Pam's bands, used her mist net poles, Walter's mist nets. 3 Varied Thrush 16 Dec A bit of bading in the AM only at the SH trough (Johns trap run preempted us from Big Creek) yields 4 birds, 3 unbanded, leaving bading total at 15. Then we drive into Monterey, and get a good show of diving & underwater swimming by Eared, Horned, r W. Grebes as well as Surf Scoters. at Fishermans Really impressive. Also, a Ferruginous Hawk in wharf Carmel Valley at the Marble Ranch
