1979 Ronald L. Mumme 3 Melanerpes formicivorus Bianca Hastings Reservation (2-5 Aug) the Valley Oak to the right of me, along with another presumed Black Oak bird. Two Coopers Hawks around, birds seem to be laying low. Big (20 birds) flock of Scrub Jays working the burn. Most look like juveniles, but it looks like a good deal of molt is in progress. 1030 Nothings goinon. End watch 26 Aug Stangereness continues here. Start watch at 1145, and see Black Oak birds fooling around in the Bianca granary trees. ♂321, ♂426, juv 497, plus a ♀ which I suspect was ♀320, all acting like they own the place. No sign of the true Bianca residents. Perhaps this explains yesterdays observation of "Bianca" birds flying to Black Oak. By 1215, these birds plus other Black Oakers had moved up to LA2 (see notes). 30 Aug Start watch 1000. ♂+ ♀ here as I first arrive. 1010, Juv 497' of Black Oak here (Metal/Black-Red Red/Black-Red), so it seems like this place is still up in the air. ♀320 Red-(Green/Black-Purple, ♂426 Black/orange-white ♂102 Yellow/white white/yellow all screwing around here. I don't know what has become of the Bianca ♂♂. 9 Sept Start watch 0845. Birds are here, but I suspect that they are still Black Oakers. No bands seen, but birds kept shuttling back and forth between Bianca & Black Oak. 28 Oct Walked through, seeing 3 birds which I suspect were Black Oak residents. No acorn storage here, probably still abandoned.
