Melanerpes formicivorus
Lower Arnold 2 Hastings Reservation
(26 Aug) but at 1230 I saw 6 birds together in the LA2 granary
(Blue Oak). I was able to read the bands of 5, ♂321 Orange/
D Blue-Yellow (N), ♂426 Black/Orange, ♀320 Red-Green/Metal,
juv 497 Metal/Black-Red, and ♂102 Yellow/White. The 6th bird
was a ♀, and presumed ♀427.
30 Aug Start watch 1045. An unbanded ♂ in the granary, working a
Blue Oak acorn. He gathered the acorn from a tree loaded
with acorns, in the ravine to the west of the granary.
The loaded Blue oak is close to the field. 1100, now
an unbanded ♀ in the granary. A few moments ago, the
NBO flew west to the large Valley Oak at the edge of
the field, just east of UA3 (see map on back). Promptly
chased by a presumed A3-4A2 bird. Same tree where
much revolution action centered on 26 Aug. 1115, ♂+♀ looking,
fairly cozy, in granary together. ♂ harvests a couple more Blue
Oak acorns. Starts working, flies off. ♀ then starts working,
the acorns the ♂ harvested. Is this common, ♂ harvesting,
than giving way to♀♀? Saw it at A3 the otherday, Looking
up, now I see the ♂ back working those acorns. 1120, ♂ digs around
in the storage holes (refurbishment?). End watch 1150
9 Sept Everytime I come here, something different is happening. 1000,
an UB♂ plus a banded ♀ which I read as D Blue/Red. That
would point to ♀507, the former resident here! Where
has she been the last 2-3 weeks?
Later here for roosting. Zilch!
28 Oct Flushed 2 birds from the granary, A modest amount (~200)
of acorns stored.
