1979 Ronald L. Munne Melanerpes formicivorus 3 Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation (22 June) from the upper Arnold 2 area, Now NB♂ + ♀207 tthings calming down considerably. NB♂ + ♀207 looking very tight + friendly. Revolution from start to finish!! Not bad. ♂NB still drumming occasionally at granary, Thought I heard him give a few garricks during the melee, but it could have been another bird. End watch 1500. 23 June Arrived 0730, and revolution is still in progress. This time it's an unbanded ♀ that's here, being chased fairly vigorously by ♀207. The NB♀ drummed + garricked several times (about 10-15). Most of the garricks were given when she was alone and the NB♂ + ♀207 were together. ♀207 + NB♂ looking very tight, open wing wakas, drumming together on the granary, ♂ flying to the ♀ + vice versa. ♀207 also gave some garricks, when alone or with the ♂ when the NB♀ garricked. Briefly a 4th bird, another NB♀, but she did not tarry. I doubt that the NB♀ here will accomplish anything. Absolutely no sign of any of the former Arnold 3 residents. ♀207 drumming from granary, follows the ♂ as he flies. End watch 0830, As opposed to yesterday, ♂ isn't doing very much at all, no chasing. Seems to prefer ♀207 (more wakas, flies to her, etc.) but he also wakas when approached. Back here 1030. ♀207 + NB♂ only birds, things have really quieted down. Back here at roosting, saw a bird peering out of the lower hole of the upper Arnold 2 roost + nest tree.
