Melanerpes formicivorus
Arnold 3 Hastings Reservation
28 April Start watch 1015. Considerable sapsucking in Blue
Oak to west (downhill) of blind. ♀#120 L Pink-white/
Metal seen, plus ♂#123 DBlue/Metal, ♀207 Mauve/
L Pink Red. Also, a male White/Metal was hanging around,
a "peripheral" group member, according to Walt. Two
unbanded ♀♀ came in about 1115, much subsequent
garrick, yuck, etc. Noticed the ♂♂ did most of
the sapsucking, ♀#207 was mostly eating catkins,
although I twice saw her chase a Nuttall's Woodpecker
from a smaller, apparently secondary sap tree. No
dominance activities seen, I'm afraid. End 1200.
12 May Looked here briefly in passing, seeing tons of Starlings
and saw [illegible]#120 L Pink-White/
Black/Green, sapsucking from Blue Oak.
20 June Start watch outside hide at 1000. Nest recently
failed. Two adult Scrub Jays feeding fledglings
nearby. ♀207 mauve/LPink Red and ♂120 LPink-
White/Metal, LPink-White/Black-Green both seen,
preening, some flycatching, poking around in granary,
loafing, etc. Nobody else seems to be around
end watch 1200.
21 June Start watch from hide 1140. Two birds, a ♂ + ♀, seen
only at a great distance. End 1245
22 June Start watch from hide 1225. Hold on to your hats, folks,
it's a mini-revolution! An unbanded ♂ suddenly appeared,
and ♂123 DBlue/Metal started to chase hell out of
him. This went on for 5 min or so, with the
