1979 Ronald L. Mumme 4 Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak Hastings Reservation (28 June) FORMICIVORUS)! Interesting, but probably of dubious importance. 29 June I came up here in the afternoon for a nest watch, but the wind was blowing at a good 20-30 mph clip so not surprisingly, things did not go well. Both babies are still in the nest, one occasionally peering out and "karriking. 30 June Here at 0830 for a nest watch, and I think the babies may have fledged. No squeakings from the nest. Arather strange thing happened in that an unbanded ♂ looked into the nest hole just after I arrived. No response from the cavity. The unbanded ♂ then began to poke around in the granary, but was not chased. ♂102 and ♀(427, I think) were seen nearby briefly. 15July Start watch from hide 0700. ♂102 White/Yellow and ♂321 Orange/DBlue-Yellow (N) both around, both seen sapsucking briefly from scrawny Live Oak Wof the granary. Are Live Oaks preferred for sapping in the summer? Blom-one also recently in live oak, while Blue Oaks definitely preferred in late winter-early spring. Ask Walt. 0825 NB ♀chased by another ♀, I don't know who. ♂♂ had been around her, didn't seem to mind her atall. 0835 ♀320 Red-Green/Metal also seen, sapsucking from Live Oak. Other birds seen flying off toward Arnold Spring. 0855 No sign of babies. Leaving to check Spring 1020 No wickers at the spring but had fun watching birds come to drink.
