1979 Ronald L. Mumme 2 Melanerpes formicivorus Black Oak Hastings Reservation (21 June) I saw absolutely no feeding visits while trying to stay awake for 2 1/2 hours. Walt had banded the nestlings just prior to the watch start at 0840, so that might have had something to do with it. No birds seen, [illegible] no flycatching around the granary as in yesterday's frenzy. 22 June Another almost wasted watch, although I did manage to write a letter to SWFUMD while picking up 2 feeding visits. Details on reverse. 23 June This watch, late morning to early afternoon, was a total waste. I did get most of a letter to Ken Bradbury written, and I caught up on my field notes, but that was essentially it. Zero feeding visits in three hours. How exciting! 24 June Another deadly AM watch here -- no visits. I did see a Plain Titmouse * Whitebreasted Nuthatch peer into the hole on 2 separate occasions, but that was the best I could do. A pair of [illegible] Western Tanagers cruised through the area briefly, and lots of Oriole (unbanded) activity. The Black Oak adults were all very active, especially in the trees east of the blind + nest, and especially around 0900, flycatching in the granary tree. No feedings, though. I did write letters to Nelson + Ken. Also watched a few hours in the evening, seeing an impressive three visits. Wrote a letter to Terry. 25 June Watched here this morning, and even though the birds were flycatching like crazy, I saw no visits, except one by a Nuttall's Woodpecker.
