Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3 Hastings Reservation
20 Aug Start watch from the sap area near Finch Creek, where birds were always hanging out in mid-July. Nuttall's Woodpecker, Anna's Hummingbird seen in one of the sap trees (Live Oak) but no wickers. I suspect birds are now eating Green Arorns (finch birds doing that earlier). A few calls heard in the direction of the granary: 1130
Finally, juv 491 LGreen/Dblue - Yellow seen in sap tree, but I do not know for sure if he was sapsucking.
22 Aug Watched roosting here, seeing 7 birds roost in the "left" hole, (where 3 birds roosted 15 July). Thus, the group is still very much intact, with the possible exception of one bird. However, they certainly are making themselves scarce. Walked around here some earlier in the day without hearing a peep.
25 Aug A successful ambush in the "left" hole, catching 6 birds (I thought I had seen 7 roost the previous evening).
23 Nov Start watch 1415. ♂184 Wh-Bi/Bi-wh here, appears to "guard" the granary about 20 minutes. Also one of the fall babies J526 wh-r/wh-r plus a ♀ which I suspect (saw some yellow) was ♀383. Wasn't sure. One bird spent several minutes in one of the roost holes. End 1615.
25 Nov Start 1000. Flush 3 birds as I arrive. 1010 ♀265 DBlue/r-LBl metal/Black-white and Juv 526 In Valley Oak scanning. ♂184 white-Yell/wh-yel also around. Some flycatching on this nice sunny morning, Dblue
1130, ♂68 here briefly. ♂184 working on a storage hole.
