Melanerpes formicivorus
Road 3 Hastings Reservation
12 May I took a two-hour nest watching shift from
1600 to 1800. Walt checked the nest before
I started, and he saw 3 eggs in the hole.
The details of the watch are on the backs.
Also attempted to see which roosted,
but I was unsuccessful. One bird came fairly early,
followed by another which perched outside. The two
exchanged chatters before both flew off. As it was
getting dark, one returned. I have no idea
who anybody was.
4 July Cruised by here looking for babies. Both 490 Black-Yellow/metal
reversed and 491 D Blue-Yellow (N) / L Green are here and doing OK.
I even saw #491 do a little flycatching, Lots of attending the young, although I saw little feeding.
females
444 D Blue-White (N)/Orange for sure, 265 D Blue/
female Yellow-L Blue for sure, 383 Yellow-D Green/Yellow
for fairly sure, and one that seemed like it had to be
446 L Blue-Red / Red L Blue. The "Red" part seemed like it
female was equal in width to the L Blue portions. I'll have to check
with Walt or Larry, whoever, I saw that bird feed 491.
I saw 490 & 491 together only once briefly, so I didn't catch
any dominance interactions. Too Bad!
7 July Start watch from along road, near creek, at 0810. Nothing
much happening. Birds flycatching in distance. End 0830.
15 July Watched roosting here, seeing 7 birds roost in two
separate holes of the sycamore. Drawing on the back
shows the holes. More than 7 could have roosted.
