Finch Hastings Reservation
(18 July) All these last hurried notes were taken 40m south of the
Finch bridge in a couple of stubs of a sycamore on the S
side of the road #293, 63, 66 + 282 all
seen in it, along with juv. 500 + 499. Note who fed
who: 63 -> 500, 293 -> 499. At one point, 499 flew
to 500 (or where 500 was perched, and open-winged walked,
sat in the same perch for 20 seconds or so, But I saw
no dominance interactions. End 1100 seen to be sapping,
from several (?) of the Live Oaks around the Valley Oak
near Finch.
20 Aug Passing by at 0920. 66 Red/L Blue-white here. Other birds,
including some babies, heard nearby. 0935, 282 Tan-Red/
Tan-Red, and an adult ? (293?) also here. 293, more
or less confirmed, Metal/?, . 1600 Juv #500 Red/
L Green still alive. See foraging notes. Later, a bird of
unknown status seen plucking green acorns from a Blue
Oak that was absolutely loaded. 1200 well up on PO Hill,
I stumbled upon a Live Oak Sap tree, just oozing with sap.
Juv. 501, Yellow/Metal, L Green/Yellow working it, and
scolding me like crazy in the process #501 eye is already
beginning to lighten. He had numerous opportunities to
chase a WB Nuthatch, and later a plain Titmouse,
out of the sap tree, but he never did. Anna's Hummingbirds,
of course, also all around the tree. End 1245.
22 Aug Startwatch 0945. Juv 501 L Green/Yellow in Blue Oak that is
absolutely loaded with Acorns. Tree is along creek, 40m upstream
from bridge. Juv. 501 does not forage optimally. He tries several
