1471 Ronald L. Mumme 2 Melanerpes formicivorus Finch Hastings Reservation 6 July Start watch 1115 Lots of action and lots (at least 3) of babies around. The only one I was able to read the bands on was 501, Yellow-Metal. Also saw ♂63 Green-Black/Green-Black pack the heck out of one baby after it begged persistently following feeding. 7 July Back here in the AM. Only one babies bands read, 499 [illegible] Metal / L Green - D Blue. Four Adults seen, ♀293 White/Orange-L Green, ♂63, ♂ 66 D Pink/L Pink, and ♂282 Metal/Red-Tan. The first three fed babies as I watched. Lots of frantic flycatching. 11 July Start watch 1615 from steep hillside of Arnold, overlooking the entire territory. Great view, good light, but no birds. Only ♀293 Metal/Orange-L Green seen. Plus a nice view of a Band-tailed Pigeon. End 1745 16 July A quick look here produced ♂282 [illegible] Metal/Red-Tan, and at ♀444 D Blue-white (N)/Orange, apparently just passing through on her never-ending shuttle between Road 1 and Road 3. 18 July Startwatch from Road, 0800. 0820, a juv. in the spindly valley oaks, perhaps 502. Thought I saw metal on upper left. 845. Hooray! #500 Red/L Green still here! Birds seen to have a sap tree (Live Oak, of course, with attendant Anna's Hummingbird) up on Poison Oak Hill. ♀293 x ♂66 seen here. 0945 moving toward road 3, 499 eating baby acorn, I think fed to it by ♂. ♂63 feed juv 500, insects.
