umme, R., 1978 Acorn Woodpecker Melanerpes formicivorus 1 Sept -- Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co. I arrived 29 Aug from Berkeley. Weather: warm, clear Days, cool nights. Birds fairly inconspicuous, mostly supsucking, little acorn gathering. Seems to be poor acorn crop, only Golden Oaks and Black Oaks on Arnold seem to be producing. Watched "Big Tree" (4 birds) pre roost behavior 31 Aug and 1 Sept. Each time 2 birds exchanged mountings. Helped Walt Koenig drill holes in artificial granary, placed in Sycamore tree 31 Aug, 1 Sept. Two unbanded birds trapped at "Plaque" 30 Aug, banded. One ad. ♂, one juv. Had idea for research project. Using mounted birds, taped playbacks, determine if ♂♂ on territory respond more vigorously to intruding ♂♂ during early nesting (egg-laying or prior), late nesting, non breeding, than to ♀♀. Also test response to mounted ♀♀ during basic 3 periods.
