Melanerpes formicivorus
Westgate Hastings Reservation
25 June Start watch at 0800. Yesterday Walt had found a nest
with three dead 15-day old babies at School Hill West, and
he presumed that the nest had belonged to Westgate. He had
seen Westgate birds fooling around up there a few weeks
ago. 0850 Unbanded ♂ briefly in sycamore west of the gate
sycamore. 1000, Three birds seen, NB ♂, NBR,
and another male which I think is missing most of
his left foot and leg.!! Perhaps it is ♂'58, since he
was banded by the MacRoberts with their too small
metal bands. Indeed, ♂'58's metal band was on the
lower left leg!! Hmm. I saw this mystery bird perched
on a horizontal limb nearby briefly, and I think the
green band remained on his left leg, but it could be wrong.
In fact, I could be wrong about all this. I'll have to ask
Walt what the characteristics of the School Hill west nest
were. Perhaps Westgate holes were unsuitable for a one
footed bird, hence the move to School Hill west!! Interesting
idea, but probably total bull shit. Need to watch here
some more to check this out. End 1045.
Checking with Walt later, School Hill west appears
to be a legitimate group. Oh well, that blows my
theory.
26 June Watched roosting here tonight, seeing three birds roost
in the "west" sycamore. The hole was the top hole of an
WWA near-vertical stub in the center of the tree. The
stub had three roost holes, and some storage holes. One
bird roosted much earlier than the other two.
