1979 Ronald C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Westgate Hastings Reservation 23 Feb Start watch from Live Oak near gate on SW side of Road, 16/0 hrs. Unbanded ♀ (#574), Plus ♂ #58 M/Light green. It also saw a ♂ beg from #58. Could only see that bands were very dark, probably (?) ♂ 467 D Green/LG-DG? ♂#58 + ♂ #258 BP-W/M sapsucking in blue oak behind sycamore west of gate sycamore end 1750 25 Feb Start watch 0730. Four birds seen, unbanded ♂, unbanded ♀, ♂ #58 L Green/L Green, Metal/L Green, and ♂258 BPink-white/Orange, B Pink-White/Metal. Activity was concentrated in sap oak behind sycamore granary west of the gate sycamore. I also saw what I interpret to be submissive behavior, begging-like "Mickey-Mouse" calls in the presence of another bird. Never heard ♂58 call, although he was frequently intree with ♂238, and to a lesser extent ♂521
