1979 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Gazebo Hastings Reservation 20 July Start watch at Gazebo nest, 1030. Walt had just banded the unbanded ♂ here this morning, catching him at dawn. 1110, ♂ which I'm pretty sure was unbanded, feeds nestlings. ♀ 485 Mauve / Black-white (N) also around, NB ♂ flycatching feeding nestlings. Crouched down low to hawking perch, hitched to other side, when Red-shouldered Hawk flew over. No sign of the newly banded ♂, undoubtedly still freaked out. ♂ 480 must be gone. Walt saw three birds at roosting last night, so all now accounted for. Aug 21 Start watch 1100: ♂ 517 L Pink / Metal here. 1200 That's all Sept 8 Start 0930. Birds hanging out west of granary. A baby (!) seen, I think 510 M / Yellow-white , but not sure. mauve/blk-wht (N) ♀ 485 Juv 509 metal / Green-Dgreen, my ♂ 516 metal / yellow-? all definitely seen minutes later, working acorns in Valley Oak adjacent to fence and dirt road ♂ 517 L Pink/metal also here. Juv. 510 is still not definite. I could have easily confused 509 with him. 1030. Bingo Juv 510 (I read bands as Metal/or-wht) here. Briefly in same tree with a NB ♂. End watch 1045. Nov 17 Watched here awhile, seeing 3 birds but reading the bands of just one, ♀ 509 Green-Dgreen/yellow
