1979 Ronald L. Mumme 2 Melanerpes formicivorus Blom-One Hastings Reservation 11 Aug Start watch 1030. seen as I sat down near Live Oak sap tree. 1130 Zilch -- not coming to sap tree. 21 Aug Start watch 0830, Birds! Lots of them, picking Green Acorns off the Live Oak on the big knoll, 150 meters north of the granary. Some chasing, too, so probably more than one group is working the tree. Saw bands of left leg of an ad I, I read as Light-Dark/Metal, can't square that with anything likely (maybe 518 from Gazebo?) 0930 After chasing these guys around some, it may be that the odd birds were from the "Sunken Valley Oak" territory in Corral Viejo Canyon. At least, that was the general direction that I saw 3 birds (an adult and two unbanded juveniles) take after leaving the Live Oak knoll. I saw the ad harvest a Valley Oak acorn and feed it to one of the babies, ever seeing my first bit of juvenile dominance. Too bad they were unbanded. One bird, perhaps the ad, seemed to be banded. 0945. Confirmed, sunken oak did have a nest this year! Flushed a NB baby, and he flew directly to the granary. 31 Aug start watch 1100. An ad and a juvenile flycatching in the granary metal/yellow area. 1150, Juv 495 Yellow-Dpink/Yellow here, much flycatching, And he seems to be in full adult (!) plumage!! eye very white. Juv. 494 white-Red/Metal, also coming along, but eye still dark; Appeared to beg from 495! No sign of anybody else. 1230 8 Sept Nothing seen here in passing. 27 Oct Start watch 1440. Two of the babies here, and both are ?! ?494 white-red/Metal and 495 yellow-Dpink/Yellow.
