1979 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Blom-one Hastings Reservation 7 July Start watch 1615. An adult ♀ (didn't see bands) and two babies, #495 Yellow-DPink/Yellow, and I think (not positive) #494 White-Red/Metal, hanging around to the southwest of the granary. Later, in Live Oak Sap tree, #495 again and positive #496 Mauve-L Green. Can't say 495 is certain yet. 1715. Yes, 495 is certain; saw White-Red/Metal on left leg. All three babies alive and well! ad ♀ is 478, I presume. Quick look at bands looked like DBlue-Orange/DBlue-Orange. End 1745. 10 July Start watch 0930, ad ♂ * ad ♀ plus two babies, one of which was #495 Yellow-DPink/Yellow. #495 was pecked several times by the adult male, which my quick look suggested was ♂479 DBlue/DBlue-Yellow (N). Later #494 White-Red/Metal. No dominance stuff seen. 20 July Start watch 0730. On my arrival I flushed 5 birds, (liveoak) some from the sap tree, others from the live oak perch to the west. Set up hide at saptree. 0740, Anna's Hummer in the sap tree. 0750 ♂479 Metal/DBlue- Yellow (N) in saptree, SAPSUCKS. Another bird (ad?) chases Nuttall's woodpecker. 0830, juv 495 + 496 seen sapsucking (Yellow-DPink/Yellow and Mauve/L Green). also perhaps a third baby, too, but I didn't see. A hint of a dominance interaction when #495 seemed to peck at #496 as they flew to a nearby perch. Wasn't sure, though. 0920, juv NB oriole, sapsucking! Have to tell Pam. Actually, it could be a ♀. Hard to tell. ♂479, 496 chase oriole 0950. Overall not defending tree much; 496 sapsucks a fairly good amount. End 1000
