Melanerpes formicivorus
1800 Hastings Reservation
11 May Start watch 1430. Was here earlier in the day and thought I saw an unbanded ♀. Checking it out, I was correct. An unbanded ♀ and ♂476 Black/Lgreen the only birds here. Both very tight, and they "go everywhere" together. Saw one of the birds supplant an intruder from top of granary Valley Oak. (Int. flew south)
Birds spent most of their time eating buds/catkins (latter more likely) in a late-greening mistletoe infested Blue Oak toward the 1500 knoll, and catkin-eating/flycatching far to the south of granary, much preening at both places.
End 1545
20 June Start watch 1645. ♀193 DPink/metal and ♂347 [illegible] Metal/LPink-DBlue hanging out together in the granary. A third bird, not seen well enough to sex or "band", was also seen.
End watch
☺ 1830
23 June Start watch ☺1845. Three birds seen, ♀193, ♂347, plus ♂476 Black-LGreen. I'm starting to feel pretty good that this is a complete census.
End watch 1935.
1 Sept Checked the holes here. Also saw no birds.
