1979 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Plague Hastings Reservation (19 Sept) then seemingly to fly to the nest hole! After further watching, it became obvious: They were feeding babies! It was late (1800) when I hustled up to the nest hole, only to find two babies, about 15-20 days old (near banding age). These guys really pulled a fast one on us, nesting for [illegible] nearly a month right under our noses, without anybody noticing. Walter had gone to Berkeley today, and I was unable to find his Pesola or calipers, or wing rule, so I did nothing but open the nest and count the babies. Interestingly, the ♀ (presumed 482) actually attacked me as I climbed up to the nest, making 4 close passes at my head. 28 Oct Sitting around the labs waiting for Walter, I saw both babies 521 Black-yellow/Metal and 522 white/Green-Green(N), also presumed ♂ 473 ? / Metal 24 Nov Lots of storing activity at 0845! Both basing here, 521 + 522 , and both have remarkably white eyes. Both storing with some enthusiasm.
