1979 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Plaque Hastings Reservation Start watch 1350. Both ♂ #473 (Green/White and ♀ #482 (Blue/white-Rod seen. Much karrit-cut calling. 25 March The ♀ moved here recently from Buckys. I heard the ♀ give gar three or two garricks (curks?) Three more garricks is succession while the ♂ 50m away, karrit-cutting. 1425 ♂ continues karrit cuts at a distance. # 1450 Have heard no wakas from these two, although they "duet" in karrit-cuts (3 times separate bouts since I've been watching. So far no close approach to each other. 3 July Start watch 1545. The past 2 days I've wasted about 7 hours looking in vain for the Plaque fledglings. Pam says that she saw them about 1wk ago on Blomquist Knoll. Right now I'm looking at the ♀482 Metal/L Blue in the trees NE of the gasoline barn. ♂473 also seen briefly, (Green/White bands seen. Still no sign of the babies. Over by MacRoberts, I later saw 2 adults (Plaque?) chase an intruder. 5 July More of same, starting 0230. At 0900 ♀482 excavating hole in Valley Oak NE Plaque tree (nest tree). 0915 she urks (garricks?) twice, then stops excavating. Over by MacRoberts, she did a good bit of probing + pecking in one of the Blue Oaks, garricking twice, then returning to the excavation hole at 1005, garricking 3 times. ♂473 also around. No sign of babies. ♀ stops excavating at 1020. 19 Sept Big Surprise!! While sitting in Walter's office I noticed the Plaque birds flycatching from the Valley Oak nest tree
