Red-headed Woodpecker
Melanerpes erythrocephalus
8 June -- FLORIDA, Hillsborough County, Temple Terrace --
clear, hot, 0850 - 1000 hrs. winds 0-15.
Returned to the woodlot along 4th & 5th hole, where
the pair I watched on 12 May. Now a good nest
in very top of lead Longleaf. Appeared to perhaps
be incubating, but not especially attentive. Witnessed
copulation at 0930; ♀ leaves nest, perches on branch
beneath cavity, ♂ flies in, lands to left of ♀,
mounts by flapping to directly on back of ♀, then slipped
to the left, propping himself with left wing, maintaining
cloacal contact. Copulation about 5-7 sec. ♀ was
sleeked, nearly horizontal; neck, wings, tail [illegible] drooped.
I may have heard very quiet calls, similar to the
territorial "charr charr," much more subdued, as the
♂ landed next to the ♀,
My impression was that the ♂ was
more attentive at the nest cavity than the ♀.
Starling nest with young in cavity in same tree,
below RH nest.
8 July -- (same locale as above)
Nest still active, but appears to be young in
the nest, as adults looked like they were bringing
food to the young. Still a good bit of attentiveness.
15 July -- (same locale as above)
Arrived at the nest [illegible] around dusk, and
an adult RH was already inside the nest cavity.
I kicked the nest tree, flushing the bird out,
but it returned to the nest within a few minutes.
