1979 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation (14 July) makes sense, although a Chongo origin might also make sense, since the 3♂♂ here are all from Chongo. I wasn't positive that ♀483 chased her. Now I think I recall that Walt ambushed both ♀482 and ♀483 up here last winter, just prior to ♀482 moving to Plague. Pretty neat. Back home visiting Mom, I guess, although Mom might have chased her. 0915, ♂252 doing a little drumming in the granary. 0917, after ♂252 flies off, ♂424 drums, 0930, no babies seen, but I think I heard at least one in the general direction of the nest tree. 19 July Start watch from hide 0815, at granary, 1000, still zero. Not the day to watch here. Going to walk around. 1030, a juvenile (didn't see bands) NE of nest tree. Flushed a couple of other birds, too. End 1035 28 August Start watch from hide at granary, 0815. 0940, finally, an ad ♂ (face pattern suggests ♂424) at granary, karriting, couldn't see bands. 1000, ♂252 Metal/Yellow-L Blue, works acorn in granary (FD). 1010 ♂252 drums, for no apparent reason. 1045 Still not a good day to watch here. Have heard at least 3 birds calling to the NE of the granary, including at least one (or two?) babies. Going to look around. 4 Sept Checked the holes here 0830. 3 birds, all banded and all in ♂♂ plumage (adult or babies) seen flycatching from the Chongo granary. Suspect they were Buckeye birds. 19 Sept Check the holes here. No nest. 27 Oct Start watch 0845. 0850, ♂252 Metal/Yellow-L Blue
