1979 Ronald L. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation (9 July) the watch are on the back of this page. Came back for roosting, and tonight is was 424 by himself. It is possible, however, that the young have already fledged, since I heard no begging noises from the nest, and 424 sat outside the nest for a long time without entering. I'll find out tomorrow. 10 July Well, the babies haven't fledged, but they might as well have considering how bad the afternoon watch was here: One visit in 3 hours. Very dull, but the "details" are on the back. I was getting the impression that there was only one baby in the nest, but I am quite probably wrong, Back for roosting, it was again 424 solo. 11 July A pretty good morning watch here. Details are on the back. Again It seemed like only one nestling was in the hole, but he was a feisty little SOB. He often directed pecks at the heads of the feeding him, and he really walloped 424 once. 12 July No nest watch here today, so the young may have fledged. But I did struggle up for roosting, and once more it was 424 by himself. Whether young were still in the hole or not remains to be seen, 13 July Final nest watch at Buckeye today, as I watched the juvenile White-Red/M, White-Red/Black-Red (N) fledge. At 0852 he simply crawled out of the hole and sat there for a few minutes before hitching up to the top of the nest tree. At 0902 he flew off toward the
