1979 Ronald C. Mumme Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation 4 July It being Independence Day, I watched the nest here in the morning. Nothing particularly exciting, save for a real feeding frenzy by ♂234. The details of the watch are on the back. 5 July More of the same in an afternoon nest watch here. Details on the back. Also checked out the roosting situation. Larry was here 3 July and it was down to ♂424. Tonight, however, it was the usual twosome: ♂234 entered first, and ♂424 followed shortly thereafter. 6 July Watched the nest here in the late afternoon, and things were fairly slow. Details on the back. 8 July The usual morning nest watch. Won't be too many more, though, as one of the babies was sticking his head out of the hole. They must be fairly well fed though, because twice birds entered the hole to feed, then left without feeding. The babies weren't begging very vigorously at all. Saw one shot at a dominance interaction when ♂252 was in the hole after feeding when ♂424 arrived. When ♂252 looked out ♂424 faced away (out from hole). This doesn't make much sense considering who's doing the night roosting and who's doing the nocturnal roosting. Details of the watch are on the back. 9 July A fairly slow morning nest watch here. Babies are sticking their heads out quite a bit, so I'd guess they will fledge the next couple of days or so. Details of
