1979 Ronald L. Mumme 2 Melanerpes formicivorus Buckeye Hastings Reservation (28 June) roosting, ♂ 234 roosted first, and I clearly saw his bands. No doubt, A second bird came in later, and I'm pretty sure that it was ♂ 424. I should have been able to make out the metal band if it had been ♂ 258, and I saw enough of the bands to suggest ♂ 424. Also he roosted there the last two nights, last night with ♂ 234 again (Larry fine). 29 June A good watch here in the morning (details on back). 49 feedings in 3 hours was a personal record, although I still saw no ♀ at the nest. Only one good possibility of observing a dominance interaction, but nothing happened, while ♂ 252 was inside feeding, ♂ 424 arrived at the nest with a nice, juicy Tipulid. No calls, though, as ♂ 424 for ♂ 252 to leave waited at the left of the hole before entering to feed. Still ♂ 424 the only bird to remove fecal sacs. 30 June No nest watch today, but I did take in roosting, and the repeat of 28 June occurred, ♂ 234 came in first, followed by ♂ 424. Both stayed in the nest, and both (as far as I know) roosted. 1 July Roosting again. This time there was a bird in the hole when I arrived at 2040, and I flushed him. Later, ♂ 424 and ♂ 234 roosted, ♂ 424 entering first, ♂ 234 just after that. ♂ 424 looked out. 3 July A successful nest watch here in the morning of a cool, breezy day. Same old story, ♂ 424 + ♂ 234 doing most of the feeding, ♂ 424 the fecal sacs, ♂ 252 some of the feeding, and no ♀ to be seen. Details on back.
