1979 Ronald L. Mumme Journal St. Petersburg Florida, Pinellas County Dec 15 On the St. Pete Count with Glen Woolfenden, Tom Barcroft, Tom Huels, Henry Robertson, Jim Rogers, et al. A pretty poor day overall, save for a good Marsh in the morning with Am. Bittern, Virginia Rail, and Mag. Frigatebird in the afternoon. Otherwise, very routine. 22 Dec N. Pinellas County, Florida A very good count with Glen, Tom Huels, & Lee Snyder. The best birds were two Surf Scoters at Courtney Campbell, plus 15 Bufflehead. Also good things were 2 Hooded Merganser, 1 Cedar Waxwing, 3 Am. Bittern, 2 Short-billed Marsh Wren, 7 Osprey, & 1 Bald Eagle imm., and a good warbler flock at Philippe Park, with Pine, Palm, Prairie, Orange-crowned, Yellow-throated, Black & White Solitary Vireo. A very good, fun count. 29 Dec USF Ecology Area, Hillsborough County, Florida A half day on the Tampa CBC. Nothing exceptional, but John Post, Susan McKay & I did see Hairy Woodpecker, Pine Warbler, 2 Eastern Bluebirds, 2 Ovenbirds, 55 Common Snipe. The high point was watching a young Red-shouldered Hawk (see page) eat part of a green heron.
