Hastings Reservation, Monterey County CA
(26 Oct) dust was nicely settled. I heard Cedar Waxwings,
saw one Hermit Thrush, and heard a sapsucker. Winter
is on the way. A very clear, pleasantly cool day.
A fair number of acorns lying on the ground. Birds
finally seem to be storing, noting acorns at
Westgate when I arrived.
27 Oct A beautiful, clear, cool day. Started with a granary
watch at Buckeye, then looked in on Blom-one in the
afternoon. In between I finally finished compiling
School Hill nest watches from September. Dinner at Red
House, and then a pumpkin-carving party with Pam t
Walter, John, and the Griffins. I managed to produce
a striking likeness of Fermit the Frog.
Birdwise, many Hermit Thrushes around, some kinglets,
a very few Yellow-rumped Warblers, but the Zonotrichias + Juncos
seem to be here in decent numbers. Heard Sapsuckers, Waxwings,
2 ♂ Lawrence Goldfinches still around, Lark Sparrows, & Black-
throated Gray Warbler, and what I guess was a Grasshopper
Sparrow in the Blomquist pasture.
28 Oct Didn't accomplish much today. Watched a little at Plaque
early, then walked up to the Arnold where I saw zilch.
I did look in on ARF and Westgate enroute. After
that Walter & I sampled acorns in Corral Viejo Canyon,
Blomquist, and The Lab area
A Taricha or the road up to the Arnold, near
corral field.
29 Oct Breakfast at Red House, then return to Berkeley
