1979 Ronald L. Mumme 36 Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey County, CA 5 Sept Watched the nest at School Hill in the AM, then sorted bugs, watered the garden at Red House, looking in on Winnie and managing to break Pam & Walters hummingbird feeder. Roosting at School Hill. 6 Sept Started the day with a walk up to Chongo, seeing nothing (no Buckeye birds there today). Then check all the "road holes" and watched successfully at Finch, Then the afternoon nest watch at School Hill, and roosting at School Hill. It was quite a bit warmer today than it had been recently, and as I write this in the Bunkhouse at 2230, I am comfortable in a short-sleeve shirt. Out at the road today I saw (late) Warbling Vireo and House Wren, plus a Black-throated Gray Warbler (♂) in Madrone Canyon. Also I flushed a covey of quail into the fence surrounding the Tennis court, killing one and injuring another. 7 Sept An early watch at School Hill, followed mostly by friggling around the rest of the day, then roosting at School Hill. Walter & Pam & Nancy all returned from their jaunts in Berkeley, Nancy kindly presenting me with the "Joy of Cooking" and "Old and in the Way" as late Birthday presents. Very nice! 8 Sept Tried to watch at Blomone and Gazebo in the morning, nearly being seen by somebody at Gazebo. Also saw a Loggerhead Shrike near the Blomone granary, School Hill Nest watch & Roosting after noon. A nice dessert at the Griffins with Nancy, Pam & Walter.
