Tastings Reservation, Monterey County, CA
(24 Aug) Helped Walter set an ambush at Road 3, and later watched
roosting there, seeing seven birds go into the ambush hole.
25 Aug A successful blood ambush at Road 3, getting blood from the
core birds. Caught 6 birds, only one baby. Later watched
up at the Arnold, slept some, had cake + lemonade with Pam and
Walter, then watched roosting at Westgate.
26 Aug Successful ambush at Valhalla, followed by a visit to the
Arnold, which produced a mini-revolution at UA2 and more
bad craziness with Bianca - Black Oak - CA2. Collected
bugs in the afternoon, the Walter + Pam had Nancy and I
up for a very nice dinner at Red House.
27 Aug Administrative matters took up most of the morning, but I did
watch some at Finch. Sorted bugs in the afternoon, then had
an interesting and productive discussion with Walter about
statistics in the reproductive success paper. Watched
roosting at School Hill West.
28 Aug A basically unsuccessful watch at Buckeye in the
morning, but I did see a Prairie Falcon, a
Mourning Dove Nest (on ground), 1 ground-dove sized nestling,
under fallen Blue Oak branch) and the tail feather
of a Golden Eagle. Mostly lounged around in the afternoon.
Pam + Walter dined with Nancy and I in the
bunkhouse. Started reading "The Boat"
29 Aug Ran errands in Monterey - Pacific Grove in the AM, buying boots
and registering my car (getting Cal plates). Chatted with Walt
about the post-doc model in the afternoon, then set up an
unsuccessful ambush at School Hill West (birds didn't go in).
