1979 Ronald L. Mumme 33 Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey County, CA (20 Aug) picking up the School Hill bugs, and the like. Did take notes on Nuttalls Woodpecker. Nancy returned from Berkeley late. 21 Aug Diddled around at Blomone T Gazebo in the AM, not seeing or learning much beyond one of the Corral Viejo canyon groups (Sunken Oak") has at least two unbanded babies. Sorted bugs and watched at Road 1 in the afternoon. 22 Aug Today was my 1-year anniversary of living in California. I celebrated by first running out of gas in the panel track on the way out to the road; That was followed by a pretty fun watch at Finch. Nancy and I went shopping in the afternoon before I returned to the road to learn nothing about Finch and Road 3 in about 2 hrs of wandering around. Roosting at Rd 5, ,26th 23 Aug Happy Birthday to me!! Started my 25th year in pretty good fashion. In the AM, Jim Griffin took Nancy & I up to Chews Ridge, and we had a very nice time. Included was a side trip to the Anastasia Canyon fir grove. Solitary Vireo, Sharp-shinned Hawk were the good birds seen. And Hairy Woodpeckers were abundant in the burned areas, working the dead trees they seem to like so much. Pygmy & White-breasted Nuthatches, too. Weighed bugs and chatted with Walt & Pam, just returned from vacation, in the afternoon. Nancy fixed me a nice spaghetti dinner, then it was party time at Red House: Nancy's Carrot Cake, Pams chocolate-lemon cake, ice cream, champagne, etc. Pam & Walter gave me a nice old book on woodpeckers. 24 Aug A pretty good day. I spent all morning up on the Arnold trying to figure out what was going on at Bianca - Black Oak - L42,
