1979 Ronald L. Mumme 31 Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA (1 Aug) as their dead Blue Oak was burned up quite a bit, although it's still standing. The W. Bluebirds, Mourning Doves, and California Quail all seemed to be cashing in on the burn, however, as they were seen in large numbers. Seeds are fairly exposed and easy to get at on the burn, explaining the abundance of Quail + Doves. Bluebirds are tougher to explain, but there were lots of wasps hovering over the scorched earth, and pumpups that was what the bluebirds were after. Nancy & I had dessert up at Red house with Walt, Pam, and the Griffins. 2 Aug Today I worked on the AOU talk some, helped make Acorn Traps, and climbed up to the Plaque nest hole to check for non-fleaged babies. Dead landed babies had recently been pulled out of Lower Haystack and Black Oak. No sign of babies in the Plaque hole, and I had a tough first lesson in tree-climbing and hole- checking. Later, watched roosting at westgate before taking a pleasant evening walk with Nancy. 3 Aug Actually went out into the field today, watching some at School Hill west. The rest of the day was spent working on AOU talk stuff, making Acorn Traps, etc. Another nice walk in the evening with Nancy, 4 Aug Look + Behold, out of the blue today returns Larry M. Hanks, arriving in style in his Datsan 280Z. The occasion was sufficient for Pam + Walter to have us up for dessert. Otherwise, I spent the day working
