1979 Ronald L. Mumme 30 Journal Mono Basin, Mono Co., CA (29 July) strictly down). A nice talk from Dave Gaines regarding the future of Mono Lake. Good campfire in the evening, with cowboy music from the two waves. Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel! 30 July Jan and I left the class last night, camping at Dave Winkler's Cabin (seeing Sage Thrasher in the morning) before accompanying Dave, Suzanne Morse, and John Anderson out to Krakatua, & Dave's Volcano-living quarters. Picked up dead gull chicks in the afternoon, then we banded chicks in the late evening. Good fun! 31 July More picking up of dead chicks in the morning before returning to shore around 1100. Jan and I left about 2, and I dropped her off in Berkeley about 715 pm before crashing in my office at night. 1 Aug Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA Finally back on the reservation, arriving 0930 after leaving Berkeley at 0600. I was greeted by the bad news that a fire had burned 30+ acres on the Arnold while I was gone, and the fire crews had bulldozed the Arnold 3 granary. Very depressing. The fire had started when Buck Cornell pulled off onto the green grass, and his catalytic converter touched the grass. Walter, Nancy & I checked it out in the afternoon and the Arnold Field looked like pretty much of a moonscape. Bianca & Black Oak survived unscathed, but Arnold 3 suffered dearly, as did Big Tree (also bulldozed). Lower Arnold 2 could also be in trouble
