Lower Lundy Canyon, 5 miles N. of Mono Lake, Mono County,
CA ~ 6600 feet
(27 July) of the Mono Lake, Tioga Pass Region,” taught by
Dave Winkler and David Gaines. The ride here was
very beautiful, going through Yosemite, Todownne Meadows,
and Tioga Pass. After setting up camp at Lower Lundy
Canyon, we explored Black Point, and I saw
Brewer's Sparrow and some probable imm. Sage Sparrow.
Black-billed Magpies at Mono Co. Park, and Clark's
Nutcrackers at Tioga. Pygmy Rabbit in Sagebrush ut RP.
28 July Today we visited Mono Lake at the county park,
then started to explore Virginia Creek all the way to
its headwaters above Timberline at Virginia Lakes. Enroute
we saw Mountain Chickadee, Cassin's Finch, Orange
crowned warblers, and Sage Grouse on the way back.
Also gr Green-tailed Towhee. Yellow-bellied Marmot,
Pika, [illegible] Chickarce, and Least Chipmunk
also all seen. A very nice hike around the Virginia
Lakes area.
29 July Today we explored the South shore of Mono Lake,
including the south Tufa, Mono craters, etc. Swam in
the lake, the washed off in a nearby hot spring.
2 Northern Phalarope, plus many Wilson's Phalaropes
and Eared Grebes also seen. We then explored the
large Jeffrey Pine (and later Lodgepole Pine)
forest to the SE of the lake. Around Crooked
Meadows area we saw Mountain Bluebird and
Dusky Flycatcher (up+down tail wag, Gray Flycatcher
