Hastings Reservation, Monterey County, CA
21 July A terrific day!! First of all, Rain! Real, live, unadulterated
rain!! A few sprinkles, distant thunder when I woke up.
Watched at Black Oak for awhile as the overcast became
greyer, thunder increased, and the rain started to come
down in earnest. Late morning, Nancy, Jan + t took
a walk in the rain up around School Hill and School
Hill West, and It was great! beautiful views of the
fog rolling in, beautiful sounds of the rain dripping off
the branches. We got thoroughly wet, but I enjoyed it
very much. We succeeded in flushing a Barn Owl on the
School Hill Acorn Trapline , and hearing two wickerbills
at School Hill West. A fun lunch, complete with fire
in the woodstove, followed in the "cozy" bunkhouse (this is
Nancy's first day in the bunkhouse). I tried to do a
little bit of work on the AOU talk in the afternoon but didn't accomplish much. We fed Jan some
leftover burritos before she left , just as Buck Cornell,
his wife Sally, young baby Christopher, and graduate
student Jan (washburn?) formerly of Florida State, drove
up in the fog. They seemed like nice folks. At dusk,
Nancy + I walked up out to the road in the fog, putting
the final touch on a really marvelous day.
22 July The good days just keep on rolling. This one was made
exciting because I found a first bird record for the
Reservation, an out-of-range, out-of-season Parula
Warbler (see copious P. americana notes). After yesterday's
rain, today was hot + muggy, making the warbler
