Hastings Reservation, Monterey County, CA
(15 July) I then watched some at Black Oak, the collected
buggies in the afternoon, seeing a Golden Eagle
being harassed by Red-tailed Hawks (see sp. acct.).
Dinner at the cabin with Nancy, then roosting at
Road 3.
16 July Started the day by fooling around with the road groups,
spending most of my time at Road 1, where I had a
pretty good watch. Spent almost the entire afternoon
sorting bugs (what a drag!) before having a nice dinner
with Nancy at Hastings Cabin. After dinner, we
went on a pleasant walk up Finch Creek from Road
3, seeing Pat's cabin for the first time, enjoying the
maples & alders upstream, and checking out the damage
that the fire caused. I was going to try to find and
watch roosting at School Hill West, but I remembered
that I hadn't watered Walt & Pam's garden (they are
in Berkeley) and seen Winnie, so I did that instead.
17 July A fairly eventful, productive day. Had an excellent watch
at Black Oak today, before reading most of Peter
Starey's thesis. Dabbled a bit at Road 3 in the
late afternoon, after things had cooled off, and had a
leftovers dinner at the cabin with Nancy. Tried to
watch roosting at School Hill West, my first visit
up there. I saw no birds, but I did manage to
find a NOAA radio telemetry weather device,
which
had floated down next to the School Hill West granary.
Took notes on Chestnut-backed Chickadee & Western Bluebird.
