26 Aug (cont) -- and 2 Hermit (1 imm., 1 J) were [illegible] seen in Douglas Firs next to a grassy meadow along the Cata-act Stream. Nuthatches (10) seemed abundant in the Fir-Oak Madrone forests along the stream runs. Also saw 3 Empidonax sp. in the ravines. Not markedly yellow, little contrast between O throat + breast, underparts somewhat buffy, but not white or yellow. Very high pitched songs + calls. Appearance suggested Dusky or Hammonds, voice Western, habitat Hammonds' or Western. Probably Western, but I did not note a breast as yellow as the plate in [illegible] Peterson. Other birds Scrub Jay (5) Steller's Jay (5) "Oregon" Junco (2) Bewick's Wren (2) Red-tailed Hawk (2) Warbling Vireo (1) Chestnut-sided Chickadee (5) Fleeting glimpses of California Quail, Acorn Woodpecker, White-throated Swift. 29 Aug - CALIFORNIA, Monterey Co., Hastings Reservation. 1 Sep Have made my first visit to Hastings with Walter Roenig, Pam Williams, John Davis, etc. New birds are Black Phoebe (2) Nuttall's Woodpecker (5), Plain Titmouse (10), Yellow-billed Magpie (large flocks, about 35, on Carmel Valley Rd.) Acorn Woodpecker Hutton's Vireo (1), Western Bluebird (10) Anna's Hummingbird (3), Black-headed Grosbeak (1), California [illegible] Quail (30) Western Meadowlark (1), Lesser Goldfinch (1). Also Turkey Vulture (10) Cooper's Hawk (2) Red-tailed Hawk (5) Am. Kestrel (1) Morn Dove (20) Hairy Woodpecker (3) Scrub Jay (15) Com. Crow (5) Bushtit (5) White-breasted Nuthatch (3) Bewick's Wren (2) House Finchl. (2) Brown Towhee (20) Lark Sparrow (1)
