1979 Ronald L. Mumme 20 Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey County, CA (2 July) On the wires paralleling the fenceline (at the very foot of Haystack Hill, I called North Carolina before dinner, watched roosting (or lack thereof) at Y, and ate a great peach pie (made by Nancy) with Larry & Nancy in the bunkhouse afterwards. 3 July Another "shitty day in paradise." Really, not all that bad. An OK nest watch at Buckeye in the morning, grocery shopping, and then more wasted time looking for Plaque babies. I tried to watch roosting at the "group" west of MacRoberts, but failed miserably. Peach Pie & Ice Cream with Nancy, Larry, Barbara (Nancy's roomie at Berkeley) in the bunkhouse afterwards. 4 July On the USA's 200th 203rd, I watched at Buckeye in the morning, then accompanied Walt to Coral Viejo canyon to try to help him open a nest hole over there. No roosting tonight, as Pam & Walt herded the whole crew up to Red House for a 4th of July Barbecue. 5 July Wasted the entire morning looking for the babies at Plaque. Things look bad for them, especially since Nancy watched roosting there tonight and saw just two birds roosting in the nest hole (fide Larry). I took my afternoon nest watch at Buckeye, washed some clothes, and then watched roosting at Buckeye. 6 July A pretty good day!! Started very early with a successful ambush at Arnold 1, catching the unbanded ? there. After buging a few zeds, I then watched a little for babies at Finch and more successfully, Road 3. Saw no dominance
