1979 Ronald L. Mumme Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA 25 June Slept late this morning before going out to Westgate to watch for birds, and saw a one-legged bird (see Westgate notes). I then trucked into town for groceries, and then back up to the Arnold for yet another in a continuing series of exciting watches at Black Oak. I tried to watch roosting at Arnold 3 while Walt was trying his luck at Bianca, but I learned absolutely nothing. 26 June An early watch at Black Oak (one feeding visit, a letter to Russ & Judy) got the day off to a roaring start. I then had a grim watch at the nest at Buckeye, after Larry showed me where it was. In between, I checked all the holes on the Arnold, seeing nothing that looked like nesting activity. For roosting, I took in Westgate, hoping that they would roost in an ambushable hole. I'm not sure, but it doesn't look at all good. 27 June Began the day watching up at Buckeye before moving on to the Arnold for a Black Oak nest watch, "helloing" the Arnold holes, and watching roosting at Arnold 1. Pam then had Larry, Nancy, Ruth Griffin and I up for dessert (pettifoors) and champagne. Two glasses of champagne on an empty stomach (I hadn't had dinner yet) were too much for me.
