Journal
Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA
(1-3 June) of Nesting Pelagics, 1 pr of Black Oystercatchers
with eggs, 3 Pigeon Guillemot nests (one with a
single egg?) Cliff Swallows, White-throated Swifts,
Rough-winged Swallows, Lawrence Goldfinch, Pygmy
Nuthatch, abundant white-crowned Sparrows, etc.
2 Brown Pelicans, 1 Sea Otter, Sea Lions, Harbor
Seals, etc. We ate lunch at Lobos before leaving,
and Jan, Ron, Anna and I had fun on the
way back.
14 June Walt & I drove up to Arcata for the Cooper Mtngs,
camping along the way the night of 14-15 June. At our
campsite along a river near Dos Rios, I saw Common
Merganser (f, apparently with a nest in tree cavity
over river), Acorn Woodpecker, Spotted Sandpiper,
Western Flycatcher, Cliff Swallow, Ash-throated Flycatcher,
Good time at the meeting.
18 June I left Berkeley around 1230 with a carload of
stuff, and arrived at Hastings for my summer residence
at 1615, moving into the north bedroom of the bunkhouse.
Went out with Walt to check the nest at Black Oak
(two healthy young) and the nest at Valhalla (failed,
two dead just-hatched young and a third near death
that died later). I tried to watch roosting at Road
1, but nobody roosted in the nest (it too may have
failed! School Hill, Arnold 1, Arnold 3 all
failed about this time, after a spell of cool
weather).
