(25 May)
Good days work!! (sarcasm). I did manage to see a couple of unbanded ♂♂ and an unbanded ♀ at Lower Arnold 2, and I did find out where at least one of the School Hill birds is roosting (low Blue Oak Hole) but that was about all I contributed. White-tailed Kite along Big Creek at dusk.
26 May
Things slightly better on this very hot day. I watched (successfully) at Finch in the AM+PM, and tried to watch roosting at Lower Arnold 2, flushing two birds out of the Valley Oak hole behind the dead Blue Oak. They didn't return later, and did not roost in the Blue Oak holes, either. I last heard karri-kats down in the canyon.
Chatted with Bonnie Stearns and a couple of other psychers re: Acorn Woodpecker Biology.
27 May
Ambushed with Walt at School Hill today, trapping ♂402 + ♀260 at the roost hole, meaning ♂8b spent the night in the nest. After bagging a few zeds, I then had a fairly dull watch at Black Oak.
At dinner, Walt suggested that during nest relief, ♂♂ chatter, but ♂+♀ walka. Dominance? Walt noted at Finch that one bird chattered profusely when exchanging at the nest, and seemed like the less dominant individual.
