24 Aug -- CALIFORNIA, Alameda Co., Berkeley campus. Around campus and Strawberry Canyon saw several large mixed flocks of Chestnut-backed [illegible] Chickadees and Bush-tits a pair of wrentits in evergreen oak + [illegible] chaparral. Also Hairy woodpecker (1) Orange-crowned Warbler (1) Rufous-sided Towhee (2), very unlike eastern birds in caltrap. Steller's Jay (3) Scrub Jay (5) Song Sparrow (8) House Finch (1#) 26 Aug -- CALIFORNIA, Marin. Co., Muir Woods, Bolinas Lagoon, Mt. Tamalpais area. 0800 - 1600. Clear, cool (65° F), breezy Birded these areas and saw 6 [illegible] new species Winter Wren California Gull Western Gull Townsend's Warbler Hermit Warbler Red-breasted Nuthatch Winter wrens were abundant along the forest floor of Muir Woods. Many Chestnut-sided Chickadees also seen there, one Hairy woodpecker, Steller's Jays (5). Possible Neurotrichus [illegible] greggsi inlitter. Black-tail Deer (Downtown) Western Gray Squirrels Gulls were at Bolinas Lagoon. Ringbills were abundant there, but one (California) was slightly larger than The Ringbills, but colored like a Herring Gull. Red spot on bill, but legs yellow-greenish and not as large as a Herring Gull. Mantle darker than Ringbills. Showed "foot-paddling" foraging behavior while nearby Ringbills did not. About 15 Western Gulls seen around the lagoon. also Long-billed Curlew (3) Marbled Godwit (5) Whimbrel (2) Pine Siskin (5) willet (15) Phalacrocorax spp. Brown Pelican Common crow Black-bellied Plover Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina) 50 California Sea Lion (1) Zalophus californianus Hiked along Cataract and Simmons Trail on Mt. Tam, 1300-1600 hrs. Townsends Warbler (1# orimm)
