1979 Ronald L. Mumme Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA (26 April) Many areas of dense lupines in bloom. Shooting stars, yellow viola, Orobanche still around. Saw two lifers, Black-throated Gray Warbler (a singing ♂ around the labs), and a ♂ Black-chinned Hummingbird at Pam & Walt's feeder. Valley oaks & Blue Oaks are about half leaved-out. Many catkins on all oaks, especially agrifolia. Warbling Vireos, N. Orioles numerous and singing loudly. Cooper's Hawks conspicuous calling. Met Larry Hanks, and chatted with him and Nancy. Wilson's Warblers, House Wrens, etc. 27 April A very pleasant day! Watched at School Hill and Haystack-Blomquist in the AM, then helped Walt set an ambush at Lower Itay before touring Corral Viejo Canyon in the late afternoon. Finally, I tried to watch roosting at Lower Itay in the late afternoon-evening, but the two birds looked at the hole suspiciously before moving on, and apparently roosting elsewhere. Dinner at Red House with the entire crew. Enroute, I added Ash-throated Flycatcher, seen at dusk on Haystack Hill. Golden Eagle over Watertank Hill, Red-shouldered Hawk apparently nesting at the Sycamore, Oriole nest at the N. Plague Valley Oak, Diamondback Rattler near Hastings Cabin (found by Larry & Nancy), striped Skunk at Blomquist. 28 April An enjoyable AM on the Arnold, watching at Arnold 1 and Arnold 3. We also stopped by Lambert, where birds had recently returned. A ♂ + ♀ (banded) were offspring of the
