Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA
(27 March) just one bird roost) and 1600 (flushed two birds
out of the granary roost very late: I hope they
continue to roost there).
30 March Arrived here with Frank about [illegible] 1630, enjoyable
dinner with Pam + Walter
31 March Left with Frank, Walt + John to Hunter Liggett Military
Reservation. Fantastic Acorn Woodpecker habitat!
Open Valley Oak Savannas, and almost every [illegible]
large oak served as a granary (bark of main branches
+ trunk) However, we saw no stored acorns, and
only a few woodpeckers. Must have been a very
poor crop year, too. We did see a group of three
where two birds were following the third around,
and Walt speculated [illegible] guarding behavior.
Also saw 2 Wood Duck, 1 Western Kingbird, Lark
Sparrow, Killdeer + rest (sp. acct.) 1 Golden Eagle,
10 Violet Green Swallows, 2 Rough-winged Swallows,
plus usual Nuthatches, W. Bluebirds, Juncos, Scrub Jays,
Pickers, Nuttall Woodpeckers, singing Purple Finch
(at Hastings [illegible] fide FAR)
1 April Returned to Berkeley early AM.
26 April Drove here in a driving rainstorm, with my car
screwing up constantly, (stalling at idle speed), gas stations
closed and out of gas, etc. Miserable! I did stop at
San Francisco and pick up COS addresses from Matt Leddy.
Hadn't rained all that much at Hastings, but things
are really beautiful right now. Everything is very green
