1979 Ronald L. Mumme 5 Journal Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., CA (25 Mar) starting to leaf out, etc. Grass isn't especially tall yet, and Red Hill still looks predominately gray. Grazed areas looks very green. Many Shooting Stars, Baby Blue Eyes, Johnny Jump-ups, Popcorn Flower, some Amsinckia (fiddleheads) etc. Other birds seen today include House Finch (2, with nest in stable), Violet-Green Swallow (many) Say's Phoebe (2), Lesser Goldfinch (10) N. Oriole (1), Orange-crowned Warbler (1), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (4), etc. Sceloporus out and around, plus one Uta on road SW of labs. Many Hyla calling, plus egg masses and tadpoles in horse trough. 26 Mar Not a very productive day. Gray + breezy in the AM, and wind and rain all afternoon and night. I tried to watch at Hay-Blom, Lower Haystack, 1800 x 1500 and only saw the ♂ at Hay-Blom, unbarred ♀ at Low Hay, and Zilch at 1500 or 1800. I tried to go back to the latter two for roosting, but the little buggers go to roost early when it rains. Both groups had birds in the main holes of their respective granaries at [illegible] 1740 and 1750, respectively, about an hour earlier than the bird at Low Hay roosted the previous night. It was interesting that I saw no Violet-green Swallows today, after they were so prevalent yesterday on Haystack Hill in the good weather. 27 Mar A very strange day. Heavy rain in the AM, partly cloudy + breezy in the afternoon, and rain again this evening. I managed to sneak watches at School Hill and 1500 in the afternoon, then screwed up trying to watch roosting at 1500 (saw
