1979 Ronald L. Mumme 4 Journal Strawberry Canyon, Berkeley, Alameda Co. CA 17 Mar A partly cloudy, cool day following rain. I led a Zoo 107A group up the main fire trail, and didn't see too much except 5-10 singing Orange-crowned Warblers. About 20 Song Sparrows, many singing ♂♂, two Fox Sparrows, singing Ruby-crowned [illegible](2), 1 Brown Creeper, 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch, 25 Bushtit, 2 Bewick's Wren, 1 Allen's Hummingbird (♀), etc. 1 Steller's Jay with nest material. 18 Mar Had breakfast with Peter Lois Myers et al in Orinda, and took some Acorn Woodpecker notes on Pearson's birds (see sp account). 24 Mar Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, CA -- I arrived here about 2pm, as Ted Koehler, who was visiting Walt & Pam, was just leaving. Later Walter & I tried to watch up on the Arnold, where we saw no Acorn Woodpeckers, but I had fun watching other birds visit Bianca's sap tree (see Bianca notes). I tried to watch roosting at 1800, but they didn't roost in the dead tree where we bagged the ♀ last fall. Very enjoyable dinner at Red House with Walt, Pam & the Pattons. 25 March A good field day! Fun watches at Lower Haystack (mini-revolution) and Plaque (post-revolution), plus my first Western Flycatcher(2) and Lawrence's Goldfinch, (5) both lifers seen out in front of the lab area. Hastings is definitely springing up. Oaks are in bud now (no leaves), Buckeyes are leafed out, Willows are
