1979 Ronald L. Mumme 3 Journal Hastings Natural History Reservation Monterey Co. California 23-25 Feb A very good and productive weekend down at Hastings, which included an Acorn Woodpecker bullsession with Walt, Frank, John Davis and I. I think I got pretty good vibes from all concerned regarding [illegible] my tentative research plans (within-group behavior and division of labor, relative contributions of group members to group activities, etc. To top it off, I had a very interesting watch at Westgate on 25 Feb (see Westgate notes) in which I saw a fair amount of dominance interactions (mostly submissive begging calls). Very encouraging! Pam + Walt gave a very enjoyable dinner party for Frank + Dorothy, and that was great fun. I saw some unusual behavior in Red-shouldered Hawks (see sp. acct.). Rufous-sided Towhees singing a fair [illegible] amount, creeks flowing about 1-2 cfs, wilows beginning to bud out, etc. 9th March Pt. Pinole Regional Park, Contra Costa Co., CA A 200 107A trip here on a cool, foggy, overcast day. Allen's Hummingbirds were everywhere, and we saw a couple of nice pendulum display flights. Also found a hummer nest w/ 2 young, about 6 m up in a Eucalyptus at fork of a bare, horizontal branch. Tree about 25 cm diameter, near firebreak clearing, Couldn't tell the species involved, and I heard a couple of Anna's around to give me pause. Harvest Mouse, Meadow Vole, Ringneck Snake, S. Alligator Lizard, Arboreal Salamander, Batrachoseps.
