18 Aug -- TEXAS, Junction, Kimble Co. -- At rest stop along interstate saw first Bewick's Wren in scrub oak - Juniper habitat. Earlier, many Swallows (Barns, perhaps Bank + Cliff) seen moving generally south east of San Antonio, west of Sonora, Texas, vegetation became more arid, desertlike, much less oak and juniper. Mesas. Turkey Vultures only bird seen that was common, some Mourning Doves. 19 Aug -- TEXAS, NEW MEXICO, E. ARIZONA -- Along I-10, saw Roadrunner east of El Paso, followed by many White-necked Ravens and Swainson's Hawks along the desert plains of New Mexico west of the Rio Grande. Western Kingbird, Brown Towhee ~~~Blue Grosbeak~~~ around Willcox Arizona. Blacktail Jackrabbit, Spotted Ground Squirrel, Chemidophorus, Leopard Lizard. 20 Aug -- ARIZONA, esp. Picacho Peak State Park. Birded is a Saguaro cactus desert, 0830 - 0930 hr. Cactus Wrens abundant, also saw Black-throated Sparrows, and ♀ House Finch, Gilded Flicker, Gila Woodpecker. Also a family of Thrushers that I thought at the time were LeConte's. Further check of Peterson does not discount Curve-billed, although birds at Picacho did not appear to have spots. Abundant Yuma Antelope Ground Squirrels, Sylvilagus sp. 22-23 Aug -- CALIFORNIA, Berkeley campus. Have seen Steller's Jays Scrub Jays, Chestnut-backed Chickadees, Brewer's Blackbirds, Brown Towhees, "Oregon" Juncos, numerous Morning Doves.
